Metabolic syndrome and risk of coronary, cerebral, and peripheral vascular disease in a large Dutch population with familial hypercholesterolemia.

چکیده
V arious studies (1–16) in recent years have reported that the metabolic syndrome is associated with an increase in cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, there is still an uncertainty about the clinical importance and consequences of the metabolic syndrome (17). There is paucity of data looking at the effect of metabolic syndrome, specifical ly on cerebrovascular (CeVD) (9,12,18,19) and peripheral vascular (PVD) disease. Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common hereditary disorder of lipoprotein metabolism (prevalence 1:400). The disorder is caused by mutations in the LDL receptor gene. The objective of our study was to assess if there was an additional risk associated with the presence of metabolic syndrome for coronary disease, CeVD, and PVD in this high-risk population, which included patients inducted from 27 clinics around the Netherlands.

Introduction: Ischemic heart disease is the most common cause of mortality in developed countries. CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) is one of the therapeutic methods in ischemic heart disease. Methods and Materials: Considering the increased incidence of coronary artery disease in Iran, and with increased rate of CABG, we performed a cross sectioned study (1996-1999). In 635 patients 467 mal...

Abstract Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a hereditary dislipidemia. Patients present with extremely high level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), which is due to mutation in the gene of LDL receptor. Homozygous patients (HoFH) whose incidence is 1 in 1.000.000 are at high risk of premature aortic valve stenosis, and coronary artery atherosclerosis. In homozygous individual...

Animal models of atherosclerosis have proven to be an invaluable asset in understanding the pathogenesis of the disease. However, large animal models may be needed in order to assess novel therapeutic approaches to the treatment of atherosclerosis. Porcine models of coronary and peripheral atherosclerosis offer several advantages over rodent models, including similar anatomical size to humans, ...
